Alan Thomas Gardner, 74, of Elmer passed away on Saturday, February 25, 2017. Born in Bridgeton, NJ to the late Thomas Baird and Mary Fouler (nee Bowman) Gardner, Alan was a 1961 graduate of Bridgeton High School and served his country in the Army National Guard during the Cold War in the early 1960’s. Alan worked hard all of his life for Gardner Electric, early on working alongside his father Tommy and his brother Jimmy until their passing and then continued the family business on his own, building lasting relationships with his customers until he retired in 2015. He was also invested in serving his community as a member of the Jay Cee’s, the Elmer and Upper Pittsgrove land use boards and as president of the Chestnut Grove Cemetery board. Alan loved to golf when he was able and enjoyed numerous golf outings and weekend rounds with his buddies. He also enjoyed taking trips to the shore and boating, especially in Sea Isle City and Avalon. Alan was an avid Eagles fan and a longtime season ticket holder, being in attendance for their only championship in 1960. He was a true family man and especially loved the time he spent with his grandchildren. There was nothing Alan wouldn’t do at the drop of a hat for his family and friends.

Alan is survived by his loving wife Nancy Downer-Gardner of Upper Pittsgrove; his sons Ian Gardner and his wife Shanna of Linwood and H. Alan Gardner of Absecon; his daughter Lisa Irvine and her husband James of Sunrise, FL; his stepsons Dennis Downer of Doraville, GA and Byron Downer and his wife Allison of Pittsgrove; his grandchildren Greyson and Gavin Gardner and Madeline and Cecily Downer; his sister-in-law Sharon Gardner; and his nieces Pam Kern, Ann Marichich and her husband Michael and Patricia Gardner. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his brother James Gardner.
