Salem, NJ- Salem County will begin its 2017 rabies clinics this month with Alloway and Salem scheduled for this Saturday, January 21, and Elsinboro and Pilesgrove slated for January 28. Rabies shots are free for pets of New Jersey residents.
Each year, the Salem County Department of Health and Human Services coordinates a series of state and municipal sponsored rabies vaccination clinics for pets. The rabies clinics are free, and all healthy cats and dogs are welcomed, as long as they are accompanied by an adult. Dogs must be on a leash and cats must be in a carrier.
Last year, the Department’s Environmental Division forwarded 31 potential rabies specimens to the state for testing. Of the 31 specimens tested, 10 came back positive. Fourteen people were recommended to see their doctors to be treated for rabies exposure. In 2015, there were 41 possible rabies cases and 13 were deemed positive.
“It is important to protect our pets and to protect ourselves from exposure,” said Freeholder Director Robert Vanderslice. The Freeholder Director, who also chairs the Health and Human Services Committee, continued, “We hope that residents will continue to take advantage of the free rabies clinics, as this is critical to preventing the spread of this disease.”
Last year, one bat, one skunk, one groundhog, and seven raccoons tested positive for rabies.
The free rabies clinics in January are:
Alloway – 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., Alloway Twp. Road Garage, 84 Camp Edge.
