American Rodeo – an exhibition of photographs by Janet Greco – opens in Barcelona, Spain

Barcelona, Spain  —  American Rodeo, an exciting new exhibition by American photographer Janet Greco, opened at Or Verd Barcelona, a popular cafe at 158 Diputacio, 08011 Barcelona, Spain, on Sunday October 9, 2016. The exhibition comprises 16 black and white photographs shot at Cowtown Rodeo, the oldest weekly rodeo in the United States.

Cowtown is a place embedded deep in Janet´s memory from when she was a little girl growing up in New Jersey, watching her favorite cowgirl TV show, Sally Starr. Cowtown Rodeo, incredibly, is not based in the wild west of the USA, but is based in her home state of New Jersey, deep in South Jersey, in the township of Pilesgrove.

The exhibition features some stunning shots of the rough stock riders in action. She captures the spirit of the rodeo, the riders and the atmosphere. The feel is straight out of a cowboy western film.

Janet made the photographs over a period of five years, between 2007 and 2011. She was invited by the owners, Grant and Betsy Harris to shoot behind the scenes. To be permitted to do so, she was obliged to blend in by wearing a hat and western-style clothes. She also found secret places to shoot from, where she more than once came eye to eye with a bull.

Rodeo and equestrian photography are ongoing long-term projects for Janet.

“I consider myself an urban cowgirl photographer lost in Barcelona. My dream is to become an accredited photographer of the Professional Rodeo Cowboy´s Association (PRCA),” stated Janet.

Though she is based in Barcelona, she exercises her passion by photographing Spanish equestrian events and fiestas. More information on the inspiration for this exhibition can be found here.

American Rodeo can be seen at Or Verd Barcelona, 158 Diputació, Barcelona 08011, Spain (Metro: Urgell) until 30th November 2016.

A Note from the Editor:

The historic Cowtown Rodeo is located on Route 40 in Pilesgrove Twp. Its facilities are, also, host to a two-time a week farmers market/flea market that attracts thousands from across the Eastern United States. Cowtown is the largest and most popular tourist destination in Salem County, New Jersey. It is the only large, privately-owned stadium in all of Salem County that can host such large events.
