Rowan Strings At First Presbyterian Church in Salem

Music Around the County proudly presents the Rowan Strings, under the direction of George Atanasiu, with special guest organist Larry DePasquale, at the First Presbyterian Church in Salem, NJ on Sunday, April 10 at 3:00 PM.

The program will include many favorite classical pieces including Johann Pachebel’s Canon in D Major and the first movement of Johann.Sebastian Bach’s Concerto in D Minor.  Larry DePasquale will join the strings on George F. Handel’s Concerto Number 13 in F Major for Organ.  The Allegro section of this concerto is also known as the Cuckoo and the Nightingale because the organ imitates the call of the cuckoo and the lyrical song of the nightingale.  The concert will also feature some lighter pieces including Aaron Copland’s Hoe-Down from Rodeo and Folk Tune and Fiddle Dance by Percy Fletcher.

Conductor and cellist of international acclaim, Dr. George Atanasiu has received numerous prizes, medals, and his public performances have been broadcast throughout Europe, United States, Asia, and South America.  Dr. Atanasiu was a founding member and artistic director of Pennsylvania Young Performers Orchestra.  As a performer, Dr. Atanasiu has been Principal Cellist for the Garden State Philharmonic, the South Jersey Symphony, and the Sibiu Philharmonic (Romania) Associate Principal Cellist of Romanian National Radio-Television Symphony Orchestra.  He is also a Philly Pops Orchestra member and collaborates with both the Opera Company of Philadelphia and the Philadelphia Chamber Orchestra.

This Rowan Strings concert is part of “Music Around the County,” a project of the Salem County Arts Alliance and the Salem County Cultural & Heritage Commission. The concert is open to the public and there is no admission charge.  The First Presbyterian Church of Salem is located at 88 Market Street in Salem, NJ.

One more concert remains in the 2015-2016 season, Voices of Spring, An Afternoon of Opera and Musical Theater featuring Joseph Krupa and friends to be presented on Sunday, May 15 in the Davidow Auditorium at Salem Community College.
