Woodstown – The Woodstown High School football team defeated the Gloucester Catholic Rams Friday night at Clint Ware Stadium 35-0 in front of a capacity crowd. Fans packed the stands and lined the fences throughout the game.
They watched as #15 Jared Carney and #7 Dillon Hill lead the Wolverines to a decisive victory over the Rams of Gloucester Catholic. Hill started off the scoring with a Rushing touchdown while Carney had a touchdown pass to #6 Ian VanAtta and a 26 yard Interception return for a touchdown, as well.
The touchdown pass to VanAtta was on a 4th down and 8 to make the score 14-0 with 9:14 to go in the 1st half. This 4th down conversion for a touchdown was a turning point in the game.
The Wolverine defense allowed Gloucester Catholic to move the ball through the air in the 2nd quarter with Catholic QB #13 Brandon Cunningham hooking up with #11 Nick Valenti for a well-designed middle screen play and a couple receptions by #23 Keanu Kelii. This was Catholic’s best drive of the game but ended with an interception by #2 Bailey Gibson, and Woodstown would go into halftime leading 14-0.
To start the 2nd half, #2 Gibson, who had an interception in the 2nd quarter for Woodstown, took the kickoff all the way to house to make it 20-0. Later in the 3rd, Jared Carney’s previously mentioned 26 yard interception was a pick 6 that put Woodstown up 28-0 after a 2 point conversion. To cap off the scoring, #20 Keith Johnson caught a 15 yard touchdown from #11 Chad Watts to make the final score 35-0.
Woodstown improved to 3-0 while Gloucester Catholic fell to 0-3.
Players of the game for Woodstown: Senior running back, Dillion Hill. He contributed on both sides of the ball with a rushing TD and solid defensive play including an interception and multiple tackles. The other player of the game was senior quarter back Jared Carney as he threw for a touchdown, had an interception for a touchdown, and more huge plays on offense and defense holding wideout Keanu Kelii to no touchdowns as he covered him throughout the whole game.
Player of the game for Gloucester Catholic: Senior wide receiver #23 Keanu Kelii. Despite the score, he is a playmaker for Catholic and will only make more plays as the season progresses.
